“The Journey”

I am not a great reader of poetry but I do occasionally come across pieces that I really like. Ever since I started blogging and writing I have also discovered a greater love of poetry. Whereas when I was younger I did not understand it and even as I might have seen the beauty of a poem, I could never truly grasp it.

I do not claim that I now understand but I feel that I better grasp the intended meaning, if only so by a little.

This poem by Mary Oliver is one of those that I really enjoy and I thought I’d share it with you:

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save

the only life you could save.

  1. Carrie says:

    Wow. Really like that.

Read it twice…and after it sunk in, it all came together.

  2. Bob says:

We all only have one life to live grab it with both hands, sometimes we lose our grip.

Climb back on go for another ride.

  3. Great lines. True words..somehow when we slip, we need to get back on track, and then it’s a new try again..
