“The Journey”

I am not a great reader of poetry but I do occasionally come across pieces that I really like. Ever since I started blogging and writing I have also discovered a greater love of poetry. Whereas when I was younger I did not understand it and even as I might have seen the beauty of a poem, I could never truly grasp it.

I do not claim that I now understand but I feel that I better grasp the intended meaning, if only so by a little.

This poem by Mary Oliver is one of those that I really enjoy and I thought I’d share it with you:

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice–
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do–
determined to save

the only life you could save.

A small update

I have decided that I do have a little too many different things going on in this blog. Too many categories that do not always match well together.

So what I have done is that I have set up a separate blog where I will only post poems and the like whenever the mood strikes me. I will keep going with my normal ramblings and pictures and my usual rants right here for your entertainment. Well I first need to shake my muse alive, she has had enough of me for a while. I have not been very inspiring to her… too much work and no time to ponder.

I will copy the few poems I have in this blog to the other one. I will only write there if and when the mood strikes… so it could be very sporadic. If I do I will give a hollow… to this spot: adriftwithoutarudder.wordpress.com

A kiss

Light as a feather. But a breath away. A hint of things to come.

Heart pounding wildly. The sound echoing between the walls. Trembling.

The first tentative touch. Oh, that first gentle touch. So soft.

Breath catching. Darkened eyes, fire on fire. Whispered words heard.

Desire at war. Exquisite intimacy. At last.

Live life to the fullest.

Came across this a while back. I just love it.

“As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn’t supposed to ever let us down, probably will.

You’ll have your heart broken and you’ll break others’ hearts.

You’ll fight with your best friend or maybe even fall in love with them, and you’ll cry because time is flying by.

So take too many pictures, laugh too much, forgive freely, and love like you’ve never been hurt.

Life comes with no guarantees, no time outs, no second chances.

You just have to live life to the fullest.

Tell someone what they mean to you and tell someone off, speak out, dance in the pouring rain, hold someone’s hand, comfort a friend, fall asleep watching the sun come up, stay up late, be a flirt, and smile until your face hurts.

Don’t be afraid to take chances or fall in love and most of all, live in the moment because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back.”
